Every innocent victim of sexual assault should be treated with dignity and respect. We all share a common bond, remember you are not alone and it does not diminish who you are. This is a safe place to share your thoughts and seek support.

The decision to report a rape to police is an individual one. Authorities are now better trained than they were in 1993 when the crime was committed in Donna's case. Donna reporting the rape allowed for the case to be solved 11 years later through a DNA match.

A two-hour show on Donna's story and this initiative aired primetime on Sunday, April 29, 2007. It is the first time that Donna has revealed her identity since the crime in 1993. The show re-aired on NBC Dateline on Friday, September 4, 2009 and continues to air on various cable networks. Donna decided to come forward to let other victims know that they are not alone and that they can get through it. Let us know your comments about the show.

According to RAINN 15% of rape victims are under the age of 12 and of that group, over 30% of the perpetrators are family members. Unfortunately, many adults tend to try to explain away, minimize or disbelieve the child.

Many victims of acquaintance rape blame themselves. This self-blame can manifest itself in many unhealthy behaviors. In addition, fear of encountering the perpetrator in social settings can cause heightened anxiety and humiliation.

Rape is not a women’s issue. 1 in 33 men will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime. And men are certainly a secondary victim when their wife, daughter, mother, or sister are raped. Feelings of anger, rage and guilt for not having been there to do something about it are very common.

Donna’s case was the impetus for a bill signed into law in 2007 in Connecticut removing the statute of limitations on sexual assault cases involving DNA evidence. As a result, New York went on to remove the same statute. Our laws must catch up with the DNA technology that is available today. States that still have a statute include; Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Utah and Vermont.

DNA has opened up a new world for the criminal investigator. However, along with that new world comes the added responsibility of properly collecting and preserving the DNA evidence and entering it into the proper databases.

Trauma such as rape can wreak havoc on your body and mind. There are constructive ways to combat stress and it starts with identifying and recognizing your symptoms.
